Foamed PET Sheet Line from SML
Foamed PET sheet represents a breakthrough in the production of thermoformed products designed to withstand high temperatures. Traditionally, PET has not been suitable for cups, trays or containers for hot food and beverages, as the material deforms under heat — but with SML’s advanced foamed PET technology, this has now changed.
SML has developed an innovative production method where PET sheet is extruded and then thermoformed into trays and cups suitable for hot-fill and high-temperature applications — both efficiently and cost-effectively. This makes the technology especially attractive in price-sensitive markets such as foodservice and convenience packaging.
Lightweight A/B/A Structure with Up to 50% Density Reduction
The unique three-layer A/B/A structure features a physically foamed PET core.
This construction delivers:
- Up to 50% lower density
- Significant weight reduction
- Excellent shape retention and stiffness
- Improved insulation properties — ideal for hot drinks and hot meals
The combination of low weight and high mechanical stability makes foamed PET a strong alternative to traditional materials such as EPS, PP or paper-based composites.
Advantages of Foamed PET Sheet
- Suitable for hot beverages and hot food
- High dimensional stability and excellent insulation
- Lightweight construction with reduced material usage
- Optimised for efficient thermoforming
- Strong cost-performance ratio in competitive markets
- Future-ready alternative with potential environmental benefits compared to conventional foamed materials
