Even very small holes in plastic film can result in leaking bags, rejected products and customer complaints. Simco-ION perforation detection equipment can detect holes, pinholes and weak spots directly in a moving material web.
The solutions are primarily used on bag-making machines and converting lines for food packaging, freezer bags and other packaging that must remain airtight. Because the method is electrical and does not depend on visual contrast, it can also be used on transparent, non-conductive film.
When a hole passes between the electrode and a grounded metal roller, a controlled spark-over occurs. The system detects the spark-over and sends a signal that the machine PLC can use for counting, alarms, machine stops or rejection.
Perfomaster is Northern Grafics’ most commonly used solution. It is recommended for compact installations where a defined area of the film must be inspected. The unit has an integrated high-voltage source and is powered by 24 V DC.
HD DET with CM5-30 is recommended when a larger area or a greater part of the web width must be inspected. HD DET is a separate detection bar that is sized for the material web and connected to an external CM5-30 generator. HD DET has a maximum operating voltage of 30 kV, so CM5-60 must not be used as a more powerful upgrade.
Static charge remaining after inspection may need to be neutralised with an ionizing bar.
